So apparently I’ve been using a class D provisional license all this time. I remember being told that it gets upgraded to a regular class C when you turn 18. But they never said I had to go to the DMV to take a test to get it upgraded. So here I am, almost 22, with a license that legally does not allow me to drive between midnight and 6:00 AM or to carry more than 3 non-family passengers.
I’m going to the DMV today to have that fixed. I really don’t understand why it doesn’t automatically update itself, though. The time restriction really just coincides with curfew for minors, anyway. Can’t they just give everyone a class C license in the first place and just have a different law covering minors’ restrictions? Seems like a waste of everyone’s time to do it like this.

They must have changed it, when I turned 18 they sent a form in the mail so I could upgrade my class D license to a class C, I was able to do it online. Also my class D license expired on my 21st birthday.

Yeah, mine expires on my 22nd. Not sure why that is, since it’s the vertical “Under 21" style.

I still haven’t gotten mine and I’m turning 27 this month. Similar setup in Alberta

The one thing the VA DMV got right is just having laws that govern under 18 drivers and not have separate license classes. But they screwed up with the vertical under 21 licenses since they expire on your 20th birthday and you have to renew and they don’t expire again until you turn 28. So you would still be 28 with an under 21 license..... luckily I just changed mine when I changed my address.

I got mine before the new licenses came out, I’ve still got my old class D license and I checked it and it did expire on my 21sy birthday. They must have changed it then. Looks like I'll be back in ga soon, so I get to have fun getting a new ga license soon.
